Nikolas, a technical specialist from the United Kingdom, is one of the early learners taking a MicroBachelors® program on edX. He recently completed the first course in the Computer Science Fundamentals program, Introduction to Networking, and told us about his experience in the program so far.
What edX course or program did you take and what were your goals in taking it?
The MicroBachelors Program in Computer Science Fundamentals from NYU. I am taking this course to improve my knowledge in computer science topics, with the goal of applying what I learn in my current role, and narrowing down to an area of technology I can become an expert in.
How was your experience learning online?
I find the edX platform easy to use. There are many areas you can use to support your learning, like discussion boards, wiki and of course, content.
How has your learning impacted your career, life, or community?
I am constantly amazed by how computers and technology work. This course is a nice reminder of my yearning to get more and more under the hood, and discover how it’s all put together.
How do you plan to use your learning in the future? What’s next for you?
I plan to use what I learn and apply it to real world problems I face in my job. Like anything, the more you know, the better you can understand. I’ll keep learning and seeing where it takes me.
What advice would you give new edX students?
Don’t give up! You might feel overwhelmed with what you have decided to undertake, but take it step by step. Use all the resources you have and obtain some good textbooks on your topics to support your learning.
