We are thrilled to welcome Western Governors University (WGU) to the global community of edX partners. WGU was founded in 1997 by 19 U.S. governors to expand access to high quality, affordable higher education. The university is a leader in competency-based education, recognized by the White House and state leaders as a model that works in postsecondary education. The online, nonprofit university serves 120,000 students nationwide and has more than 167,000 graduates in all 50 states.
WGU’s initial offering on edX is one of our first MicroBachelors™ programs, IT Career Framework. Designed for IT practitioners, educators, and business professionals, this program introduces IT infrastructure concepts and services to support the operation and management of an enterprise environment. MicroBachelors programs are the first credit-backed stackable credential, marking a significant milestone in online learning. Created by edX in an innovative partnership with top universities and Fortune 1000 corporations, MicroBachelors programs deliver immediately transferable skills to meet the real-world needs of employers, while providing a pathway to a full bachelor’s degree.
The IT Career Framework MicroBachelors program is worth 10 credits of coursework, with WGU as the credit-granting partner. Additional credit election institution options may become available in the future. The first course in the program, Information Technology Foundations, is now open for enrollment and starts in early March as a self-paced course.
We are excited to partner with such an innovative institution in the online learning space to bring one of the first MicroBachelors programs to the edX platform. We look forward to offering additional programs from WGU in the future.
Please join me in welcoming WGU to edX!
