It was a challenging, stimulating course, very maths-intensive, and extremely fulfilling. In having to fit it in around family life, I had to take one of the course exams while sitting on a bed in a caravan! I really enjoyed the course and passed with a good score.I then fancied doing the course on Artificial Intelligence from BerkeleyX. I was at the time an embedded software engineer with a basic familiarity with object-oriented concepts. Completing this course helped me to consolidate and improve my knowledge, and it greatly enhanced my knowledge of structures such as trees and graphs. It was another course that I really enjoyed and I achieved a very good score. It was great to see my autonomous Pacman agent seemingly make decisions of its own accord and play the game on its own! I also completed that in 2012.Towards the end of 2013, I had a job interview for a new position; I had been in my existing role for 16 years so it was time for a change. I thought it was worth taking my honour-code certificates along to the interview. It turned out that one of the interviewers had taken exactly the same courses! I demonstrated a strong knowledge of object-oriented concepts and tree structures during the interview. The fact that I had completed CS188.1x really helped with this, and I am not at all sure that I would have got the position had I not done so.
I have completed quite a few other courses since. I tried BerkeleyX’s Foundations of Computer Graphics, and although I did not complete it (I achieved 30%) I found the knowledge gained to be helpful when I had to write some code to draw graphs. I consolidated my knowledge of digital signal processing with RiceX Discrete Time Signals and Systems. I completed TUMx Autonomous Navigation for Flying Robots and I was able to apply some of the knowledge gained through that course in my job as well. I have not completed all of the courses I have enrolled in; some just did not interest me sufficiently or I didn’t have enough time to complete them. However, I have really enjoyed some of them and furthering my education in this way has certainly made a difference in my life.
The company I am working for now want me to become a chartered engineer, and I’m sure that the courses I have done through edX will help to prove my commitment to furthering my education. I have contributed to edX by buying verified certificates and I am more than happy to have done so; I like the fact that most of the courses are available to anybody for free. Thanks edX!
