Connecting With Global Learners: Meet May

April 28, 2020 | Liz Joyce

May, a pharmacist from Florida, recently tried an online class through edX for the first time. One of the most surprising and exciting parts of her experience was connecting with fellow learners around the globe.

“It was an amazing experience to learn alongside students from all over the world. The silver lining in COVID-19,” May said.

Read on to learn more about May’s first-time online learning experiences in BerkeleyX’s How to Write an Essay and Academic and Business Writing courses on edX.

How was your experience learning online?

It was my first time signing up for MOOC and I didn’t know what to expect. However, I enjoyed the modules. They were succinct and clear. The prompts inspired me to write. The quizzes were challenging and tested my understanding. The answers were clear and educational. I read the modules a few times and took notes for future references. I followed the instructions to comment on other students’ work. That was an amazing learning experience for me. Towards the end of the course I developed the courage to give feedback to other students and support them in their journey to learn. I was surprised when I received a thank you note from a student all the way across the world. I read interesting essays and I was even surprised to find some high school students taking the courses to complete the requirement for the English language. Because of the lockdown I was consuming these courses all day long, I was immersed.

How has your learning impacted your career, life, or community?

I firmly believe that I improved my skills to write more effectively. This is a valuable skill in our modern time and it will affect my life for years to come.

How do you plan to use your learning in the future? What’s next for you?

I have lined up other courses that I’m interested in signing up for. Mainly writing classes such as journalism part one and journalism part two.

What advice would you give new edX students?

Sign up for a class you love to study for a start. Follow all the instructions and complete all the assignments. Take notes on the modules and what you learn from reading the assignments of other students and give good feedback. Take notes during the process. Save your notes and refer to them regularly, particularly if it’s a topic you love. I know that I will be using my notes.

Anything else you’d like to share about your experience learning on edX?

It was an amazing experience to learn alongside students from all over the world. The silver lining in COVID-19.
