Today we are pleased to announce an exciting collaboration with the College Board and Davidson College to design and deliver a suite of online modules for use by high schools in AP calculus, macroeconomics, and physics courses.

About five percent of edX students are high school age, and they enjoy the challenge of taking courses from the colleges and universities who are part of our xConsortium. So our newly launched AP project is not just a milestone for us at edX, but a natural next step as we help the College Board address particularly challenging areas where students have experienced difficulty on AP exams.

This first-of-its-kind project combines the expertise of the faculty at Davidson College, an xConsortium partner, with edX’s interactive technologies for both MOOC and blended learning settings. We see this project as just the beginning of providing next generation interactive content and assessment tools that teachers and students can use in their classroom AP curricula.

Davidson faculty are now working with teachers in North Carolina’s Charlotte-Mecklenberg School District (CMS) to develop the prototype modules that will be built on the edX platform next spring and summer. During the 2014-2015 academic year, teachers in CMS will pilot the new materials and technologies with their students. After this pilot period, we will have the opportunity to revise and refine the modules before we expand access to educators from around the country in 2015.

This AP project builds on the edX’s work with schools and other organizations to offer rigorous and inventive courses and curricula. It is through pilots and such as this AP initiative, that we are able to pave the way for thoughtful and scalable innovation in our classrooms and online.
